Unlike Apple, which releases just one version of OS X at a time, Microsoft has many different flavors of its upcoming operating system. Now that Windows 10 is close to being launched, the company has released a list of all the different editions available.

Here\’s what you need to know about each one. Both work on a wide variety of systems, including desktops, laptops, 2-in-1s and tablets. Windows Home will be the version of choice for most people, because it includes all of the major features of Windows 10, such as Cortana, the Microsoft Edge Web browser, Continuum for seamless transition between desktop and tablet views, and support for universal apps from the Windows Store. Windows 10 Pro is for tech-savvy power users or small businesses that need things such as built-in BitLocker encryption, Hyper-V virtualization, legacy Internet Explorer support and remote-desktop features.

For the average user, this is generally overkill and not worth the extra money it will probably cost to get the Pro version. Users who are already running Windows 7 or Windows 8 Home or Pro will be able to upgrade to the corresponding version of Windows 10 at no charge for a year after the new operating system\’s release.

There\’s no word yet on pricing for new installations or for those who fail to upgrade during the first year. Large schools and businesses can get versions of Windows 10 that are more specifically tailored to their needs.

These versions require a base installation of Windows 10 Pro and a volume licensing purchase that gives businesses access to Windows Update for Business, long-term servicing and advanced security functions.

Schools benefit from Windows 10 Education through volume licensing, which reduces the price of the OS while still offering enterprise-level tools.

For the mobile version of the new OS, Microsoft eliminates the Pro edition and gives users the choice between Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise, the latter of which is designed for businesses. Windows 10 Mobile also will be available as a free upgrade from Windows Phone 8. It includes support for universal apps, new touch-optimized versions of Office, and Continuum for phone , which lets you use your phone like a portable desktop when it\’s paired with an external monitor, mouse or keyboard.

Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise, like its desktop counterpart, adds extra security features and better IT management to help keep fleets of business phones in sync and up-to-date.

There\’s even a special version of Windows 10 for devices like the Raspberry Pi 2, robotics kits, and Arduino that features a more lightweight core and a reduced price tag, though we don\’t currently know how much cheaper it will be than the base version of Windows Microsoft says Windows 10 will be available beginning this summer, but the company has yet to announce an official release date or pricing for stand-alone versions.

As you and I agreed, I did try that before and the upgrade process failed, so I tried not doing it this time and the upgrade process succeeded but the non-working apps are still non-working.

Verify at least 16 GB of free space is available to upgrade a bit OS, or 20 GB for a bit OS. Unexpected new problems can be undone. But it\’s best to make one when things are running well.

It freezes the goodness in place. You\’ve got the latest BIOS, but it is old. Any Win 10 drivers will have to be supplied by MSFT or by component manufacturers. But I doubt the current problem is driver related. Looks like most of the quality updates came in anyway afterwards. But the latest one is a Do you see anything in MalwareBytes\’ settings that could affect this – maybe it does something with the firewall or blocks access to system folders? b Windows Pro edition has more control over settings than Home edition.

Ask Cortana or Search for GPEdit. Look for something inside that affects Windows features. Same problem as with GPEdit. d Ask Cortana or search for \” Reliability History \”. Does it show the Store apps are trying to come in, but failing? We could try BINGing some of that. This establishes a dual-boot which is easily reversed two ways.

You\’ll have a new menu at boot for which to choose. If the new instance of Windows works well, it proves the rottenness in the current installation is not a game-ender.

The reason I say to repeat it instead of just removing the rotten instance is to get all the partitions right. The rotten one has kept the Recovery Partition, for one thing.

I do not see anything in Malware Bytes settings that could prevent Store applications from installing. Also Malware Bytes doesn\’t prevent non-Store applications from installing, though I don\’t have a problem with non-Store applications anyway.

Windows itself has an option which I have not set and Windows itself also doesn\’t prevent non-Store applications from installing. Patience may be a cure. The duplicates in your list prove MSFT tries repeatedly. Maybe give it a few days. But let\’s see some of the error messages.

Click \” View technical details \”, then the \” Copy to clipboard \” button to post it. I\’ve BINGed some of the items in that list. It seems some of them can be downloaded personally from the NET, but I\’m unsure the result would be any better.

I\’m unsure whether I could make purchases without it, though. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community. In reply to Norman Diamond\’s post on August 1, Here was my DISM on the new one Thanks for your feedback. How satisfied are you with this reply? Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to PCR Just PCR\’s post on August 2, Oh, I didn\’t know Microsoft updated build numbers within a version, in what is supposed to be stable or slow not fast ring. The Japanese version is SP build now. Burning it to a DVD now.

In reply to Norman Diamond\’s post on August 2, I hope it\’s a fix to you. Keep us informed. It spent around 5 hours downloading updates, and then started an in-place upgrade. html Restore a System Image Backup in Windows 7, 8, 8. In reply to PCR Just PCR\’s post on August 3, And presumably do a restore too? So instead of an in-place upgrade which you thought might have a chance of working, you want to restore an installation which we already know isn\’t working?

In reply to Norman Diamond\’s post on August 3, It does a lot, but I don\’t see it directly mentions your issue. a Make a system image backup, which can undo the following. b Create, say, GB of unallocated space. d Make a separate backup of user files, including 3rd-party raw downloads. e Repeat the clean install – this time wiping the rotten instance – but read Greg\’s In reply to PCR Just PCR\’s post on August 4, We already know that clean installs have Store applications working.

My reason for not doing a clean install is that I want to keep my non-Store applications working as they are, with settings that have been working and continue to work. Yes this PC and its latest BIOS and drivers are old. They\’re old when clean installs are working. They\’re old on 3 other PCs of the same model where upgraded installs continue to work. Yes, KB was installed again after the in-place upgrade. It also had been installed before being removed by the in-place upgrade, though it had not been easy to get it installed due to repeated failures.

After the in-place upgrade, KB installs immediately. A few years ago I used GPEdit to make Windows Update notify me before downloading and installing updates, the same as used to be available as an option in Windows 7 and XP, so that I can be aware and save my work before rebooting.

I manually let Windows Update install all updates. Yes, Reliability History shows that the following Windows Updates failed. There are duplicates in the list. The number of failing applicatinos is likely greater than this. StorePurchaseApp 9PK21VDD7LD9-Microsoft. To repeat, you do not need to tell me that a clean install might work; I already know that it does.

The question is whether Microsoft can fix an existing install that Microsoft screwed up. The existence of tools like sfc and dism suggests that Microsoft intended to let some kinds of breakage be repaired.
